District Plan and Approved Changes
The District Plan sets the grounds for subdivision and land use in Southland.
Council is at present reviewing its District Plan, and is working with Environment Southland and key stakeholders to identify key issues and options. These have been consulted on in the past six months and will form the basis of the new District Plan, which is proposed to be out for further consultation in 2012.

District Plan (divided into sections)
Southland District Council is progressing four proposed Plan Changes relating to Te Anau with three of these proposed changes Council-initiated. The fourth proposed change has been initiated by private landowners who own land on the south-eastern periphery of Te Anau, which they are seeking to have rezoned.
The period for further submissions on the proposed Plan Changes closed on 22 January 2010 and one further submission was received. Resource Management staff have now commenced drafting reports for the next stage of the Plan Change process, with hearings to be held so that Council can make decisions on submissions received. Submitters may verbally present their submissions at these hearings but are not required to attend.
The Resource Management Committee hearings for the proposed Te Anau Plan Changes are likely to be held in April 2010 and formal notice of the hearing dates will be sent to all submitters. Following the hearings Southland District Council will publicly notify its decisions on each proposed Plan Change. Submitters will have the right to appeal these Council decisions to the Environment Court.
