Library Membership
Membership is free to all District residents.
To join, you need to visit any District library, complete an application form and provide identification, such as a driver's licence, passport, bankcard or similar. Young people under 16 need to have their application signed by a guarantor, such as a parent or caregiver. A library card will be posted to you within a few days and you need to bring the card with you whenever you visit a library.
All members of a family should have their own card, for purchasing and budgeting reasons. Generally each person is allowed to borrow up to 20 books for three weeks before they are either returned or renewed.
Popular books often need to be reserved and this costs 50 cents if the book is part of that library's collection or $1 if the book has to be obtained from another branch. Books not held by any Southland District library can usually be obtained from another New Zealand library for a cost of $3.
You can also borrow books from one library and return to another, but be aware of library opening hours and due dates. If you want to renew your books, you can ring the library closest to yuo or the District Library at Winton. You need to give your membership number and the books will be renewed usually for three weeks, unless it is reserved.
You can also email us on wintonlibrary@southlanddc.govt.nz to renew your books.
If you do not renew your book and go over the three-week lending period, you will be fined - $1 a week per book for borrowers 16 and over, and 25 cents for children and young adults. If you lose or damage a borrowed book, you will have to pay replacement costs.
