Riverton, a beach town 39km north-west of Invercargill, is the oldest permanent European settlement in Southland and was constituted as a borough on 9 June 1879.

It is found on the south-eastern side of the Jacobs River Estuary and is home to the beautiful Taramea Bay and Riverton Rocks area.
