Road Safety Southland

Road Safety Southland runs road safety projects and programmes in response to local road safety issues.

Work in the Southland region is carried out by Jane Ballantyne, Community Advisor of Road Safety. This position involves co-ordinating the efforts of key road safety organisations and community groups on behalf of the three local authorities in Southland: The Invercargill City, Southland District, and Gore District Councils.

There is a strong educational focus which links closely with local police enforcement and engineering work carried out by the local authorities.

2008-2009: Southland's major road safety issues are:

1. Young Drivers

2. Intersections

3. Speed - Loss of control on bends

4. Overseas Drivers

Road Safety Action Plan (RSAP): Southland Road Safety

Each year an educational road safety programme is developed to co-ordinate local community road safety efforts and a plan is written called the Road Safety Southland Road Safety Action Plan (RSAP).

In Southland, the community road safety programme provides an annual opportunity for local authorities to seek funding assistance from NZTA for programmes to address identified road safety priorities in the region.
