We recognise that the keeping of dogs is a positive part of the life of many Southlanders. Whether as working dogs or companions, dogs under responsible ownership can have a positive role in society and provide assistance, enjoyment and health benefits to many individuals and families. The Council is also mindful of the need to minimise the adverse impacts dogs can have on communities. The Dog Control Act 1996 (the Act) requires that the Council have a dog control policy in its district.
