Plan change proposed to protect night sky (submissions are now closed)
Stewart Island/Rakiura is now designated a Dark Sky Sanctuary, awarded an internationally recognised status acknowledging our ‘island’ as having one of the darkest night skies in the world.
To support this Dark Skies accreditation, SDC is notifying a change to the District Plan to include a set of lighting rules specific only to Stewart Island/Rakiura. The plan changes aim to protect the unique dark night sky from light pollution now and into the future. The proposed Plan Change is publicly notified from Monday 9th September with submissions closing at 5pm Monday 7th October.
The Lighting Guidance document [PDF, 219 KB] provides information on how District Plan rules apply to new light installations.
The Section 32A report [PDF, 310 KB] provides an evaluation of the proposed plan change objectives, policies and rules to regulate lighting on Stewart Island/Rakiura.
