Minister for the Environment David Parker today announced $3.16 million in government funding to help build two wind turbines on Stewart Island/Rakiura. Southland District Council will administer the grant from the Provincial Growth Fund to develop the project and then install the turbines and associated infrastructure. The minister said wind-generated electricity would help to reduce reliance on diesel-generated power on the Island, where consumers pay roughly three times as much as mainlanders for their power.
Acting Southland District Mayor Ebel Kremer said the announcement was fantastic news for Stewart Islanders.
"It's very positive from central government. That level of investment into Stewart Island, which is a very small community, is substantial.
"The project will come at no cost to Stewart Islanders, and no cost to Southland District ratepayers.
"It's really a win-win for the community here."
