Southland District Council’s new group manager services and assets has started in his role.
Matt Russell joined Council in late February this year.
Chief executive Steve Ruru says Council was fortunate have appointed a candidate of such high calibre in the role of group manager services and assets.
“Matt has an incredibly impressive asset management background and strong project management skills, developed in his various past roles at Christchurch City Council and Fulton Hogan. Prior to joining us here at Southland District Council, he was employed as a director at Savills Project Management in Christchurch,” he says.
Mr Russell is originally from Central Otago but grew up in Invercargill, after his family moved south when he was a child.
“The opportunity to return to Southland was one that was too good to pass up,” Mr Russell says.
“I’m very excited to be part of an organisation that oversees such a wide range of services and assets crucial to the wellbeing of Southland’s communities. I’ve received the typical warm Southland welcome and am enjoying reconnecting with parts of the district I have not seen in many years,” he says.
“We’re looking forward to making the most of the great big playground on our doorstep and spending more time with our extended family.”
Mr Russell replaces long-serving group manager services and assets Ian Marshall, who will retire from Southland District Council at the end of 2018.
Mr Marshall has remained at Council in a strategic project management position to ensure a smooth transition process prior to his retirement. He started his career in local government in January 1970, serving the Southland District as an engineering cadet. Apart from a six-year stint at Queenstown Lakes District Council, he has been with Council ever since.
