The history of Southland/Murihiku is rich and varied and each part of the district holds its own unique past. There are around 10 museums around the Southland District which tell the stories of the province's history and those who lived there.

The district’s museums are home to an array of items from vintage machinery to whaling artefacts. For information on what to do if you discover a historical site of artefact please refer to the earthworks contractors information leaflet.

The province is also home to eight heritage trails, which navigate and tell the story of Southland, combining the physical environment, people, culture and the rich history. For more information visit the Southlandnz website.
