Premises licences
On-licence
If you want to sell or supply alcohol for consumption on your premises, you’ll need an on-licence.
Examples of premises that need an on-licence to sell or supply alcohol include:
- restaurant (including BYO)
- bar, tavern or nightclub
- theatre or cinema
- hotel
- function centre
- winery cellar door
- conveyance (e.g bus, train, plane)
Off-licence
If you want to sell or supply alcohol for consumption elsewhere, you’ll need an off-licence.
Examples of premises that need an off-licence to sell or supply alcohol include:
- supermarket
- grocery store
- bottle store
- hotel or tavern that sells alcohol to take away
- remote sales premises (online or mail order)
- winery cellar door
Under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, dairies, petrol stations, and convenience stores may not sell alcohol.
Club licence
If you want to sell or supply alcohol for consumption by authorised customers (club members, their guests and members of clubs with reciprocal visiting rights) on your premises, you’ll need a club licence.
Examples of premises that need a club licence to sell or supply alcohol include:
- RSA
- sports club
- working men’s club
- social club
Temporary authority
If you have purchased a licensed business, you must apply for temporary authority to operate the premises until your own licence has been approved.
