Noise control
There are rules about how much noise people can make.
Don't let noise keep you up at night
Under the Resource Management Act 1991 excessive or unreasonable noise can be controlled. Excessive noise is noise generated by people that unreasonably interferes with the peace, comfort and convenience of others. The noise might be coming from stereos, musical instruments, alarms or machinery. This may occur at any time of the day or night.
Council's environmental health officers and contractors have been appointed and trained as noise control enforcement officers and they will assess whether or not noise is excessive. Please contact Council on 0800 732 732 at any time, day or night, if you have any concerns relating to noise.
The District noise control call-back procedure after a complaint is:
7am to 9pm - call back in one hour
9pm to 7am - call back in 30 minutes
Te Anau area temporary arrangements
Council has a fulltime compliance officer based in Te Anau who attends noise callouts. A second local officer to provide cover when the other is on leave is being considered.
Currently when the compliance officer is not available to attend a callout, a standby officer from Invercargill will be dispatched when 2 or more properties are complaining about the same noise issue. Any properties that may be causing ongoing noise problems will be investigated by Council’s noise control staff.
